Literary and Artistic Connections

"The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society"

The Manor is considered as the model used, albeit very loosely in the book, and you are welcome when you visit to see if you can spot any similarities. It is of course mentioned in the story.

" A Place of Hiding" by Elizabeth George

The Manor was used extensively by Elizabeth George in the plot of this gripping tale of mystery. The Subtropical Garden/ Sculpture Park figure pretty prominently also, though we are still looking for the hiding place!

" L'Histoire de Adele  H"  by Francois Truffaut

This award winning Film made in both French and English Tells the tragic storyof the life of Victor Hugo's troubled daughter, which had several nominations including an Oscar and actually winning, Best Film at the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics, Best Foreign Film by the US National Society of Film Critics, Best screen Play by the New York Film Critics amongst others It has a 7 Star rating IMDG.
Many of the Manor's Rooms were used extensively as locations for this brilliant, dramatic and poignant Film

" The BBC Antiques Road Show"

The Antiques Road Show has visited Guernsey 3 times in the last thirty or so years, the second time at Beausejour when the cast and production team cams on  to Sausmarez Manor for a well earned refreshment after the shooting and again in 2009 when it used Saumarez Park, again, because the Manor grounds were thought to be not large enough for all the expected crowds, for the second time running.

"Victor Hugo and Hauteville House"

When Victor Hugo Wanted to buy Hauteville House, the mortgage money for half the cost was supplied by the family at Sausmarez Manor, and remarkably he paid it off in the astonishingly short space of time of 4 years with the royalties earned from the sale of " Les Contemplations" one of the many books he wrote or had published whilst living in Guernsey.
